Understanding and Awareness

MY BLACKNESS MATTERS

MY BLACKNESS MATTERS is an online exhibit centered on stories and perspectives on what it means to be Black in Canada, in partnership with the Film Stars Project and the Georgia Scherman Gallery. Eighteen participants from Toronto share powerful self-narrative pieces written to help Canadians better understand their Blackness. The goal is to encourage social literacy, connect us through candid and brave narratives, as well as challenge perceptions. This exhibit showcases pictures, stories, and videos where past and present participants talk about what the photo exhibits mean to them.

- The Film Stars Project, 2020

The Film Stars Project is an organization that works with youth coming from traumatized neighbourhoods that are often forgotten and misrepresented, and teaches them the process of filmmaking, encouraging them to produce films on their reality so viewers can get a better understanding of their world and their struggles. Our mission/vision at The Film Stars Project is to dedicate all necessary tools and supports to assist young people to reshape their world and redefine their personal narrative by establishing building blocks of strong self-worth and self-esteem, and the technical and interpersonal learning that will lead these young people to become stars. We do this by creating a platform for young people to share their stories, ideas and voices to be heard.
