Understanding and Awareness

It’s difficult to describe how being Black differs from being any other race.

I only know this skin. As a Black woman, it means acting with poise and grace in all spaces at all times. Assumptions of who I am work mostly against me and few often work in favor of me. Either way, I get to celebrate the small wins. I celebrate my diverse lineage. I celebrate the colourful beats that move my people. I celebrate creativity that comes from the fight for survival. I celebrate strong ancestors that made change possible today. Simply put, being Black equates to the constant feeling that I have more to prove and/or refute than you do. It means I have work to do.
