One evening, after I got a ride back from church with my youth mentor, we were in the car talking. After 10 minutes a police officer came to our parked car and shined his flashlight in our eyes. He wanted to know what we were doing. My mentor explained we just came back from church and we were just talking. The police officer then asked for my mentor’s license and registration. While my mentor was taking out his ID, the officer asked if we had anything unholy in the car and my mentor responded, “No officer.” The officer then went back to his car with the ID and came back and said that he doesn’t want us parked in the car at this time of the night and asked us to go home. I was shocked by the whole interaction and learned that no matter what you do, you can belong to a specific group based on how you look.
