The idea of identity is interesting because in everything I do I’m constantly defining my identity and who I want to be. I’ve come to realize throughout life that it’s the trials, tribulations and challenges I’ve been through that have helped mould my character and work ethic. Someone once told me that “we need to become the role models we didn’t see growing up” and that’s one of thoughts that help guide my actions.
I never wanted to be a doctor or lawyer, but at some point I decided I wanted to be a teacher. I never did that but I teach every day. I teach the young people I interact with at the mentorship program I co-founded, I teach my nephews about the strength and responsibilities that come with being a black man, but I’ve also been taught a lot by others. I’ve learned that life continuously teaches us and if your truly listening you will hear bits and pieces of who you truly are.
