Understanding and Awareness

Josh

While it’s true that “you are a product of your environment,” what happens when the environment isn't right?

I lived, survived, and thrived in spaces that shaped me, where I faced both growth and hurt. Many teachers underestimated my potential due to stereotypes, yet I learned to adapt and learn how to learn. In communities that claimed to be “family,” I felt lonely, yet I became a brother, a son, and the "UNC" to others. I was too much or not enough in many people eyes when it came to being African, a man, a Christian. My story is both unique and common, reflecting the human experience. Being truly yourself, no matter what the challenges, is the greatest achievement. Change requires a willingness to let go of your sentiments. Blame for accountability.

Independence for collaboration. Life’s priorities shift, and culture evolves. Yet hope for a future becomes essential when change is necessary. I aspired to be what I lacked in my life and faithfully dive into the mess of the world and become. I am still aspiring to be that change in the lives of others. I am grateful for my community and the ways God has guided me.  I see that being the change you want to see is costly, but so worth it.
